Our MissionThe Goal of Liberal Arts Bequest

On his Main Hall bookshelf stood dozens of his own tattered blue Beacon Press paperback copies of Reconstruction in Philosophy. Professor John Dreher read a clean copy routinely, annotating this classic John Dewey reframing of philosophy with new insights. His Dewey seminar epitomized the core of a Lawrence education. Dreher radiated integrity and demanded constructive engagement with difficult real-world problems.
Reading Dewey with Dreher reshaped my thinking about my purpose attending college and guided me toward wider lifelong meaning. Here's Dewey: "[T]he task of future philosophy is to clarify…ideas as to the social and moral strifes of [the] day. Its aim is to become…an organ for dealing with these conflicts." This is the goal, too, of the liberal arts. What we have in common is our Lawrence education.
In gratitude, I decided to contribute to the Lawrence-Downer Legacy Circle. Join me, ensuring that generations to come will also experience the richness of Lawrence. Who was your Dreher at Lawrence?
