Our MissionIt's a Slam Dunk Percentage of Estate
Susan Nelson Goldsmith '65 and Richard N. Goldsmith '64
Rich '64 and I '65 both attended LU—met there, went off to other things after graduation and reconnected in 1968 when we married. I served on the Board of Trustees for 7 years. Both Rich and I feel we got a fine education at LU - it prepared both of us for graduate school (Rich an MA in international relations and a law degree; me an MS in urban planning and a PhD in environmental design and planning) and for lifelong learning (I finished my PhD in the spring of 2008).
We both come from academic families—and from families that taught us that those who can give should. We are fortunate to be in the position to be able to designate LU in our estate plans. I think we might well have done that even if I had not served on the board, but I was on the board's committee to get all trustees to join, so.... we have designated LU for a percentage in our estate documents. My approach to fellow trustees was "this is a slam dunk — you don't have to have the money now — but you make a firm commitment, so just do it."
